MOL Techno-Trade, Ltd. (President: Masao Fukushima, Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo) is pleased to announce the successful development and completion of the first installation on an LNG tanker of a Short-Bodied & Specialized Design Propeller Boss Cap Fins (PBCF), an energy-saving device that can be installed on vessels with narrow clearances between the rudder and propeller
It has been over 38 years since PBCF was commercialized, and MOL Techno-Trade has been involved in its development and sales for a long time, leading to the installation of PBCF on over 4,400 vessels worldwide. Leveraging its many years of knowledge and experience, MOL Techno-Trade developed this Short-Bodied & Specialized Design PBCF. This product addresses the issue of narrow clearances between the rudder bulb and propeller boss due to the increased size of rudder bulbs, which made it difficult to install conventional PBCFs on certain vessel types. By shortening the body (cap length), this product enables installation in extremely confined spaces.
As a result of CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis, this Short-Bodied & Specialized Design PBCF has demonstrated a fuel efficiency improvement of over 2.0% even on vessels already equipped with energy-saving fins and rudder bulbs. This significantly reduces CO2 emissions during vessel operations, contributing to our customers’ environmental load reduction and operational cost savings.

The development of this Short-Bodied & Specialized Design PBCF is part of this initiative, and we will continue to promote the introduction of innovative technologies.
